Jury statement

How can words be found to impressively describe the slow decay and transience of nature? In our opinion, one film has mastered this challenge in an impressively clever and well thought-out way. With just a single shot, the filmmaker manages to address a multitude of relevant issues of our time: climate change, our often perceived powerlessness as viewers and the complex relationship with nature. We recognise ourselves in the image, because we are also partly prisoners of a system that is not clearly visible at first glance, but whose effects we feel more and more clearly.
The film invites us both to reflect and to immerse ourselves in nature, accompanied by wind, birdsong and the dripping water of the melting cage. For the poetic concept that shows what film can tell in just one shot in such a short time and for the relevance and importance of the themes that have touched us deeply and occupied us for a long time, we award the main prize of the Landjäger Kürzestfilm Festspiele to Ronald
Anzenberger for ‘Like A Bird’.

Jury statement
Ahem, ahem. Like every good film, this one raises questions. For example: What exactly are we seeing here? Aliens in an Am-Dam-Des remix? Sandworms vomiting their way through the post-apocalyptic Marchfeld? A genetic mutation of sugar beet suffering from chronic bronchitis?
As with any good film, we have to answer these questions for ourselves. Or not. The film is long enough to be disturbing, but due to its predetermined brevity, the spook is quickly over. Unfortunately. Because the mystery surrounding this magnificent work of art becomes greater after each viewing: is humanity perhaps nothing more than a coughing sputum that should thank its creator and then immediately set about giving birth to more strange sputums? Are we possibly all the same, all ‘delivered’ into life by Mother Earth in the same way? Do we cough because we can, or because we really have to?

Jury statement

Names such as Knacker, Braunschweiger and Eitrige are emblazoned on a ballot paper in the voting booth. The choice between these curious ‘parties’ seems to be a toss-up anyway. But at a time when disenchantment with democracy is growing not only in Austria, but throughout Europe, this film is becoming increasingly important. With a large dose of irony and narrative skill, the filmmakers succeed in humorously addressing the increasing alienation of many voters from democratic discourse in just 12 seconds. This short film is a witty plea to take democratic processes and decisions seriously, because ‘sausage’ is not an option.
